Poet Madhumita Shukla was shot dead in Lucknow in 2003. An ex-UP minister, his wife and three others got life; most are now freed or cleared for release.
Madhumita Shukla was a young Hindi poet. The prosecution said she was in a relationship with Amarmani Tripathi, then an Uttar Pradesh minister.
She was shot dead at home. The post-mortem found a foetus of about six months, and DNA showed Amarmani Tripathi was the father.
Local police handed the case to the Crime Branch-CID on 17 May, and the CBI took over on 17 June at the state government's request.
FIR on 9 May, CB-CID on 17 May, CBI on 17 June, Amarmani arrested 23 September, chargesheet against six on 19 December 2003.
The CBI charged Amarmani and Madhumani Tripathi, Rohit Chaturvedi, Santosh Kumar Rai, Prakash Chandra Pandey and Yagya Narain Dixit.
The Court set aside the 2004 High Court bail orders after the CBI said Amarmani tried to mislead the probe and influence witnesses.
The family said a fair trial was not possible in Uttar Pradesh, so the Supreme Court sent the case to a special court in Dehradun.
Amarmani and Madhumani Tripathi, Rohit Chaturvedi and Santosh Kumar Rai got life terms. Prakash Pandey was acquitted; Dixit had died.
It upheld all four convictions and, on the CBI's appeal, convicted Prakash Chandra Pandey and sentenced him to life.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeals, leaving every life sentence in place.
Bail in 2004, cancelled in 2005, trial moved in 2007, four convicted in 2007, upheld in 2012, final in 2013.
Uttar Pradesh ordered their premature release under its 2018 remission policy. The Supreme Court refused to stay it the same day.
Courts decide guilt; governments decide remission. In CBI cases the Centre must concur. The 2013 convictions still stand.
The convicted shooter died of cancer in Lucknow jail while serving his life sentence.
The Supreme Court dismissed her challenge to the Tripathis' release and asked her to approach the High Court concerned.
It overturned the Home Ministry's refusal, saying the gravity of a crime alone cannot justify denying remission. He had served 22+ years.
About 17 years of actual custody for Amarmani before 2023, over 22 years for Rohit Chaturvedi by 2026, per the Supreme Court.
The High Court cleared his premature release. Officials say it still needs state approval, the Governor's assent and formalities.
Two released in 2023, one in 2026, one cleared in October 2026. Prakash Pandey died in jail; Yagya Narain Dixit died during trial.
