Smartphones and Mobile Operating Systems

The flagship phone and mobile-OS release cycle — iPhone, Pixel, Android and iOS — moves on a predictable annual schedule, but the actual feature and AI-capability gaps between platforms shift every year. This cluster tracks the verified release history and specification changes rather than pre-launch rumor as if it were confirmed.

This is the index to everything we publish on it. Pre-release specifications and features are marked as rumored or expected until an official launch confirms them.

The timelines

  • iPhone 18 Pro Max History Timeline — every Apple iPhone generation explained, 2007-2026
  • Apple iPhone Ultra History Timeline — evolution, rumors, Pro models and future flagship strategy
  • Google Pixel 11 Pro — the complete Pixel Pro timeline, 2016-2026
  • Android 17 Features History Timeline — evolution, AI features, privacy and security since 2008
  • iOS 27 Timeline — WWDC 2026 reveal, beta schedule, Siri AI, Apple Intelligence and the expected September release

How to read this cluster

The iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra timelines cover the same hardware line from two angles — one the full generational history, one focused on the Ultra-tier strategy specifically. Pixel 11 Pro is the direct Android-flagship counterpoint. Android 17 and iOS 27 are the OS layer underneath all of it — read those two together to see where the platforms are converging (both leaning hard into on-device AI) and where they still diverge (privacy defaults, update cadence).

What we are watching

iOS 27’s actual September release against its WWDC 2026 preview promises, and how much of Android 17’s AI feature set reaches devices outside Google’s own Pixel line first.
