UP Election 2022 Results Timeline: How BJP Won Uttar Pradesh and SP Emerged as the Main Challenger

Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies. In each one, voters elect a single MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) — whoever gets the most votes in that constituency wins, regardless of what share of the vote they got. To form the state government, a party or alliance needs a majority: at least 202 of the 403 seats.

In 2022, the BJP won 255 seats on its own — comfortably above that line — so it formed the government again, with Yogi Adityanath continuing as Chief Minister. The Samajwadi Party won 111 seats, making it the largest opposition party by a wide margin over the BSP and Congress.

Seat Share vs Vote Share

Two numbers describe how a party performed: seat share (what fraction of the 403 seats it won) and vote share (what fraction of all votes cast across the state went to it).
