The Component Ecosystem Becomes the Next Battleground
What's happening: With assembly scaling fast, policy attention is shifting toward components, semiconductor packaging and supply-chain localisation. Tata Electronics and ASML signed a strategic partnership on 16 May 2026 to support India's first front-end chip fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has targeted first silicon from that plant for December 2026.
Why it matters: Final assembly is only one layer of the value chain. This is the layer India has barely started — displays, camera sensors, precision passives and now, tentatively, chip fabrication itself.
Apple Moves Deeper Into Its India Production Network
What happened: Reuters reported in April 2025 that Apple aimed to source most US-bound iPhones from India by the end of 2026, in urgent talks with Foxconn and Tata to more than double India assembly. By its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the "vast majority" of iPhones sold in the US would carry India as their country of origin for the June quarter, with India output rising roughly 65% that fall.
Why it matters, and why it's not "done": This is a major, verified shift in Apple's supply chain — but "vast majority of US iPhones" is a country-of-origin and shipping statement, not proof that most of each phone's components are made in India. Do not read this as Apple completing a full India-only supply chain; it has not made that claim either.
India-Made iPhone Exports Accelerate Sharply
What happened: Reuters reported that Foxconn shipped iPhones worth $3.2 billion from India between March and May 2025, with 97% of that going to the US — up from a 50.3% US share in 2024. In the first five months of 2025, Foxconn alone shipped $4.4 billion in iPhones to the US from India, more than the $3.7 billion shipped in the whole of 2024. March 2025 set a single-month record of $1.3 billion.
Why it matters: This is the clearest real-world evidence of India's role in Apple's tariff-driven supply-chain diversification — and it shows exports were already re-routing toward the US well before any formal 2026 target.
Tata Enters — and Deepens Its Stake in — Apple's Supply Chain
What happened: Tata Electronics acquired Wistron's iPhone assembly plant in Narsapura, Karnataka in March 2024 for roughly $125 million, becoming India's first Indian-owned iPhone assembler. In January 2025, it acquired a controlling 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India, giving it a third Indian iPhone factory.
Why it matters: An Indian company now directly owns a large share of Apple's India assembly capacity. Tata's share of India's total iPhone exports stood at 29% in 2024 and was expected to rise toward roughly 48% once the Pegatron deal was fully folded in — a meaningful shift in who controls India's Apple-linked manufacturing, though ownership of assembly is still not the same as owning the component supply chain.

Samsung Opens the World's Largest Mobile Factory, in Noida
What happened: Samsung inaugurated its expanded Noida plant, doubling capacity to 120 million units a year (from roughly 68 million) after a ₹4,915 crore investment announced in 2017 under Uttar Pradesh's Mega Policy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in jointly flagged off the expansion under the banner "Make for the World."
Why it matters: Samsung matters as much as Apple to this story, arguably more in raw volume — it anchors India's Android manufacturing scale, feeds both the domestic market and exports, and by Samsung's own description this single facility is the largest mobile-phone factory in the world.
Apple Begins Assembling iPhones in India
What happened: Apple confirmed the first small-batch production of iPhone SE units in Bengaluru through contract manufacturer Wistron — the first "assembled in India" iPhones. Wistron later added the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 to its India lines, and by February 2020 began PCB-level (SMT) assembly at a new India plant, a small but real step beyond pure final assembly.

The Value-Chain Ladder: Where India Stands
Each rung is harder, more capital-intensive and more strategically important than the one below it
- Final assembly: Putting together, testing and packing a phone from local and imported parts. India has scaled this fastest and furthest — this is where Apple, Samsung, Foxconn and Tata have built most of their Indian capacity.
- Component manufacturing: PCBs, connectors, passive components, battery packs, camera modules, sensors. India makes a growing share of this, but a large portion is still imported.
- Semiconductor packaging & testing (OSAT): Taking manufactured chips and packaging, testing and marking them. Tata's Assam facility is India's first real move at this layer, and it is already operational.
- Chip fabrication: Actually manufacturing semiconductor wafers. Tata's Dholera fab, built with PSMC, is under construction, with first silicon targeted for December 2026 — still ahead, not behind, India.
- Display manufacturing: High-resolution, high-yield smartphone display fabrication. This is one of the most capital-intensive layers in the entire industry, and India does not yet have it at meaningful smartphone-grade scale.
