Zee News: Tracing the Evolution of India’s Hindi News Network
Zee News history from Zee TV's 1992 launch and the 1999 channel to WION, Zee Bharat's 2026 relaunch, AI anchor Zeenia and Zee Media's FY26 profit turn.
Latest Story
In 1992 most Indians had one source of television news: Doordarshan. Then came Zee TV, and within a few years a prime-time bulletin, an all-news channel and, on 27 August 1999, Zee News. The history of Zee News is the story of how Hindi news moved from a fixed evening slot to an always-on, multi-screen system: business news in Hindi, state channels in a dozen languages, websites and apps, an AI presenter for exit polls and, in August 2026, a Zee Bharat relaunch built for viewers who may never switch on a TV. Along the way the channel has drawn big audiences and serious criticism. This timeline checks the milestones against Zee Media’s filings, including its 2025-26 annual report, and corrects several claims that circulate about it.
💡 Short Answer
Zee News is a Hindi news channel launched on 27 August 1999 by Subhash Chandra’s Essel Group, growing out of news shows on Zee TV (launched October 1992) and the all-news Zee India of 1998. Its owner, renamed Zee Media Corporation in 2013, now runs 16 TV news channels in 12 languages, including Zee Business, WION and Zee Bharat. In FY26 the company returned to a small profit, and Zee News’s reach rank in Hindi news rose from fifth to third.

What will a news channel look like in 2030: a TV signal, an app, an AI presenter, or all three? Zee’s own 2026 answer is all three, with Zee Bharat streaming 24×7 for viewers who may never switch on a television.
The Zee News Timeline, 1992–2026
Newest first. Tags mark channel launches, company moves, digital and AI steps, and moments of scrutiny.
Zee Bharat relaunches for ‘Young India’ Channel
Two and a half years after its last rebrand, Zee Bharat was relaunched as a social-first, digital-native, omnichannel news brand with 24×7 streaming. ‘We are relaunching Zee Bharat in a completely reimagined avatar with Young India at its core,’ chief executive Raktim Das said. The new line-up mixes news with internet culture: News Laundey, Meme Reaction, Mission UPSC, Techlusive, Spill the Chai and Purani Files.
Two days later Zee Media reported first-quarter FY27 operating revenue of Rs 190.9 crore, up 4.7%, with EBITDA down 17.8% to Rs 16.3 crore. It said YouTube video views had nearly tripled and that DNA had run campaigns on school-fee practices and medicine pricing.
2026
A return to profit, and an archive worth money Company
In the year to March 2026 Zee Media swung to a consolidated net profit of Rs 1.89 crore from a loss of Rs 119.4 crore. The surprise driver was its own history: it earned Rs 132 crore, about 17% of revenue, licensing more than three decades of archival footage to documentaries, OTT platforms and researchers. Borrowings fell to about Rs 10.6 crore.
For the flagship, the company reported Zee News’s relative share rising from 7.8% to 9.1%, viewing time up 21%, viewership up 19.6% against 3.6% for the Hindi news genre, and its overall reach rank improving from fifth to third. Its 7:30pm show Baat Pate Ki kept the No. 1 slot.
A new chief executive Company
Zee Media appointed Raktim Das, previously chief growth officer at TV9 Network, as CEO. He had helped revive Zee Business between 2008 and 2010. His brief: turn an advertising-led news broadcaster into what the company now calls a ‘content and technology company’.
One ‘Z’ across the network Company
Zee Media replaced a patchwork of channel logos with a single redesigned Z, rolled out on Zee News, Zee Business, Zee Bharat and regional channels from Zee 24 Taas to Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh. The company said it stood for clarity, consistency and trust. The same year it added a digital Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh channel.

Zeenia, the AI anchor Digital
Zee Media’s first AI anchor, Zeenia, presented AI-assisted exit-poll data on the evening of 2 June 2024, two days before Lok Sabha results. It went on to front Zee News’s weekly Public Ke Bol AI Poll, Zee 24 Taas’s Maharashtra election survey and February 2025’s Delhi exit-poll coverage.
Why it matters: the AI was a presenter, not a reporter. The polling, editing and decisions about what to air stayed with people, which is also how Zee’s FY26 report describes it: ‘integrated with human journalists, reporters, and expert panels’.
2024
Zee Hindustan becomes Zee Bharat Channel
Zee Media unveiled Zee Bharat, a rebrand of Zee Hindustan with a new set, graphics and anchors, positioned around Indian culture and rural voices, on the day of the Ayodhya Pran Pratishtha, one of the most-watched live events of the decade. It was the channel’s fifth name in 18 years.
Sudhir Chaudhary leaves; Zee Hindustan goes digital Channel
Sudhir Chaudhary, Zee News’s editor and the face of its prime-time show DNA for most of a decade, left in July 2022. In November Zee Media said the Zee Hindustan brand was being ‘re-imagined’ with more digital distribution and a planned documentary channel. A regional channel for Delhi-NCR and Haryana was also added that year.
The anchorless channel Channel
Zee Hindustan relaunched promising news with no anchors and no newsreaders, just packaged reports, graphics and voiceovers. In an industry built on star anchors and studio debates it was a striking bet that the story, not the presenter, could hold viewers. Presenters were back on the channel by the time it became Zee Bharat.
Zee Hindustan: a second national Hindi channel Channel
Zee Media turned its India 24×7 channel into Zee Hindustan, a national Hindi channel promising more than 1,500 stories a day and a focus on state capitals rather than Delhi. ‘There will be one channel which will discuss the states news affairs,’ regional channels chief Jagdeesh Chandra said at the launch.
WION: Zee goes global in English Channel
WION gave the network an English-language channel aimed at international audiences, with an Indian perspective on world news. By FY26 its Gravitas show and summits from Davos to Sri Lanka had made it the group’s main global brand, ranked third in the English news genre on Zee’s figures.
Zee News Limited becomes Zee Media Corporation Company
The listed company changed its name to Zee Media Corporation Limited. By then it ran national, business and a growing set of regional channels in several languages, plus websites, so ‘Zee News’ no longer described the business. The same year the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand channel was renamed Zee Sangam, the first of several identities on the road to Zee Bharat.
The Jindal extortion case Scrutiny
Delhi Police arrested Zee News editor Sudhir Chaudhary and Zee Business editor Sameer Ahluwalia after Naveen Jindal’s company alleged they had demanded advertising contracts worth Rs 100 crore to drop critical coverage of coal-block allocations. Zee denied the allegation. Both editors were released on bail; the case was withdrawn in 2018 after an out-of-court settlement.
2009
One network, many Indias Channel
Zee built state-level channels for Hindi-belt markets and language channels for Bengal, Maharashtra and Gujarat, where a story that dominates Patna may barely register in Pune. The formula was a national story plus a state angle, a local reporter and the region’s own language. By FY26 regional channels such as Zee Rajasthan (40.2% share) and Zee Delhi NCR Haryana (49.7%) led their markets on the company’s figures.
2007
News becomes its own company Company
A restructuring of the Zee group in March 2006 separated Zee News Limited from Zee Telefilms (now Zee Entertainment), and the news company became a separately listed entity in July 2007. News needed its own bureaus, satellite capacity, technology and advertising sales, and from then on its own balance sheet.
Zee Business: markets in Hindi Channel
Business television in India had been largely English. Zee Business brought share prices, company results and personal finance to Hindi viewers around the clock, as retail investing grew. Twenty years later it is the network’s most dominant brand: a 60.5% share of the business news genre in FY26, on Zee’s figures.
IC-814: the first long breaking story Channel
Four months after Zee News launched, Indian Airlines flight IC-814 was hijacked on its way from Kathmandu to Delhi and flown via Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai to Kandahar. For eight days families and viewers watched developments live. The crisis ended on 31 December when India released three militants. Instead of waiting for an evening bulletin, viewers stayed with a channel for the latest update, the habit 24-hour news depends on.

1999
Zee News launches Channel
Zee News launched as a standalone Hindi news channel, the flagship of what became Zee Media. India’s private news market was taking shape at the same time: Star News, produced by NDTV, had gone 24-hour in 1998, and Aaj Tak would become a channel at the end of 2000. Zee Media now describes Zee News as ‘India’s first ever private news channel’, a claim that depends on how ‘first’ and ‘news channel’ are defined.
Zee India goes all-news Channel
Zee’s news ambitions grew inside its entertainment business. Zee TV ran a nightly prime-time news show, and the group also had an infotainment channel, EL TV. On 10 January 1998 the channel was renamed Zee India as an all-news service. Zee Media sums up the whole period as a journey that ‘started with a single bulletin on Zee TV’.

1992
Zee TV breaks Doordarshan’s hold Channel
Subhash Chandra’s Zee TV, India’s first privately owned Hindi-language channel, went on air, beamed in by satellite and distributed by local cable operators. Until then most Indians watched only Doordarshan, whose news was state-run. Zee dates the launch to 1 October 1992; some accounts give 2 October. Entertainment came first, but private Hindi news would follow within a few years.

One Channel, Seven Names: The Road to Zee Bharat
The clearest sign of how hard it is to build a second national Hindi news brand.
Zee News has kept its name for 27 years. Its sister channel has had seven identities in 20 years. It started in 2006 as a regional channel for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, became Zee Sangam in 2013 and India 24×7 in 2016, then in May 2017 was relaunched as Zee Hindustan, a national channel focused on the states. In December 2018 it dropped anchors altogether. In November 2022 the company said it was ‘re-imagining’ the brand for digital. On 22 January 2024 it became Zee Bharat, and on 12 August 2026 it was relaunched again as a social-first, 24×7 streaming brand for young viewers.
Each change was an attempt to answer the same question: what does a second Hindi news channel offer that Zee News, and a crowded field of rivals, do not? The answers moved from states, to no anchors, to culture, to youth and memes. Zee Media’s 2026 bet is that the second channel’s future is less as a TV channel and more as a stream and a social feed.

What Made the Zee Model Scale
Hindi first
Hindi gave Zee the largest addressable TV audience in India, and Zee News, Zee Bharat and six Hindi regional channels still form the core of the network.
National plus state
A national story plus a state angle, a local reporter and the region’s language. Several regional channels lead their markets, on Zee’s figures.
New categories
Business news in Hindi, an Urdu channel, an English global channel. The network sold news genres, not just news.
Free reach
Zee says Zee News has led free-platform reach since FY25, a reminder that free-to-air TV still matters in Hindi markets.
Screens beyond TV
Websites averaging 91.2 million monthly users, 14 apps and a social reach above a billion, with YouTube views nearly tripling in Q1 FY27.
Three decades of footage
The newest revenue line: old footage licensed to documentaries and OTT platforms earned Rs 132 crore in FY26.
Then vs Now
| 1999 | 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Screens | Television via cable | TV, web, apps, YouTube, social, CTV |
| Schedule | Bulletins, then 24 hours | 24×7 plus on-demand and push alerts |
| Brands | One flagship channel | 16 TV channels, 3 digital channels, 32 properties |
| Languages | Hindi | 12, including English |
| Presenters | Human anchors | Humans, plus AI anchor Zeenia for poll data |
| Money | TV advertising and distribution | Ads (78%), archive licensing (17%), subscription (5%) |
| Audience word | Viewer | User |
Speed, Trust and Scrutiny
The faster news travels, the faster errors travel too.
Zee News’s growth has come with sustained criticism, and any honest history has to include it. In November 2012 its editor Sudhir Chaudhary and Zee Business editor Sameer Ahluwalia were arrested in the Jindal case, which was withdrawn in 2018 after a settlement. Zee News has been the subject of orders from the self-regulatory News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority over individual programmes, including in 2022, and of fact-check reports and defamation suits over specific broadcasts. Zee has disputed many of these criticisms, and similar complaints have been made about other high-volume Hindi news channels.
The structural tension is not unique to Zee. Television rewards strong presentation, digital platforms reward attention and social media rewards virality, while journalism depends on verification and context. A broadcast mistake once disappeared after airing; today it can be clipped, reposted, indexed and copied for years. A news network now runs two races at once: the race to publish and the race to be right.
Corrections and Clarifications
Claims in the material this page was built from, and in common retellings, checked against Zee Media’s filings and contemporary reports.
“News bulletins began in March 1995”
We found no public filing giving that date. Zee Media says only that its journey ‘started with a single bulletin on Zee TV’. The documented step is Zee India becoming all-news on 10 January 1998.
“India’s first private news channel”
This is Zee Media’s own claim. Zee India was all-news from January 1998, and Star News, produced by NDTV, ran 24-hour news from 1998. ‘One of the first private Hindi news channels’ is the safe description.
FY25 audience claims
Figures such as ‘8th to 5th’, ‘72.3% more viewership’, 47.9 million users and 1.39 billion page views could not be matched to the sources we checked. We use the FY26 annual report instead: share 7.8% to 9.1%, reach rank fifth to third.
“193M users, 282M viewers, 36 properties”
These website figures are older marketing numbers. The FY26 report gives 212 million monthly TV viewers, 91.2 million monthly web users, 1.05 billion social reach and 32 digital properties.
“Zee Bharat, 2023-24”
Zee Bharat was unveiled on 22 January 2024, and relaunched again as a social-first streaming brand on 12 August 2026, which the original material missed.
The unified ‘Z’ and Zeenia
The single Z identity rolled out in May 2025, not ‘2025 onward’. Zeenia debuted on 2 June 2024; Zee’s FY26 report now describes it as Zee 24 Taas’s Marathi AI anchor.
WION, Zee Business’s lead, the archive
The original material skipped WION (2016), Zee Business’s 60.5% genre share, Zee Media’s FY26 return to profit and its archive-licensing income.
“3.9 million digital viewers for Chandrayaan-3”
We could not trace this figure to a Zee Media filing, so it is not used here.

The Bottom Line
Zee News began with a simple proposition: put news on private Hindi television. Twenty-seven years later the proposition is to put it everywhere, on TV, phones, websites, apps, YouTube and social feeds, in a dozen languages, with an AI presenter for poll data and a second national channel reinvented as a stream for young viewers. The company behind it, nearly loss-making for years, ended FY26 in profit, partly by selling access to its own past.
The question has changed from ‘when is the news on?’ to ‘where do you want your news?’. The harder question, for Zee and every network chasing attention across screens, is whether news can scale without losing trust.
