CBI officials meet Ankita’s parents in New Delhi Probe and politics
Ankita’s parents met senior CBI officials, who, according to the agency’s statement as reported by NDTV, assured them the investigation would be fair and impartial and would examine all aspects. The family also asked for narco-analysis tests for former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore and Urmila Sanawar, whose purported audio recordings circulated publicly. A request for a test is not a finding of guilt, and such tests have significant legal limits.
2026
Parents stage India Gate sit-in; police detain them overnight Probe and politics
Ankita’s parents demanded that Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim governor be put on hold until the CBI completes its probe, and the father gave a 24-hour ultimatum. Police detained the parents and several Congress leaders early on 15 October and released them later. The Uttarakhand BJP president said the accused had been arrested and jailed, that a Special Investigation Team was formed in time and that it led to life sentences.

2026
Dushyant Kumar Gautam named Governor of Sikkim; family objects Allegation
President Droupadi Murmu named Gautam, a senior BJP leader, as Governor of Sikkim in a reshuffle covering several states. Ankita’s parents and the Congress asked for the appointment to be held back because his name had been raised in the VIP allegations. Gautam has denied them, no court has found any involvement, and he is not an accused in the murder case. As of mid-October the appointment had not been reversed.
2026
High Court rejects bail pleas of all three convicts Court
The Uttarakhand High Court rejected the bail applications of Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta, who have challenged their conviction and sought release while the appeal is pending. The convicts argued that Ankita had died by suicide and that there were no direct eyewitnesses; the state and the family said crucial evidence was destroyed afterwards and that forensic evidence and WhatsApp chats linked the men to the crime. Refusing bail does not decide the appeal itself.

CBI registers a case against unknown persons over the alleged VIP Probe and politics
The CBI took over the state police FIR and re-registered it as its own case against unknown persons to investigate the alleged VIP role. Ankita’s parents had asked for a probe supervised by a Supreme Court judge. The new case is separate from the prosecution that ended in three convictions, and registering it does not establish that any person committed an offence.
2026
Uttarakhand government recommends a CBI inquiry Probe and politics
Dhami said the state government would hand the matter to the CBI, respecting the wishes and emotions of Ankita’s parents, and that no fact or evidence on the circulated audio would be ignored. The family welcomed further investigation but said it did not fully meet their demand for a Supreme Court-monitored probe. The decision followed two to three weeks of protests by opposition parties and social groups.

Courts step in: Delhi High Court interim order; Rathore protected from arrest Allegation
In Gautam’s defamation suit, the Delhi High Court directed the Congress and AAP to remove posts presenting him as the alleged VIP, as an interim order. The Uttarakhand High Court protected Suresh Rathore from arrest in four cases registered over the circulation of the audio, and police questioned Urmila Sanawar for hours. Rathore called the audio fabricated. None of these orders decides whether the allegations are true.
Viral recordings revive the case; police say no VIP found Allegation
Urmila Sanawar, who says she is Rathore’s wife, posted videos and an audio recording of an alleged conversation with him and said an influential person was linked to the murder. Police registered cases over the circulation of the material, and a Haridwar police officer said the person named in the chats was Ankita’s friend, not a VIP. Rathore and the man later named in the posts denied the claims. The authenticity of the recordings has not been established.
2025
Kotdwar court sentences three men to rigorous life imprisonment Court
After a trial of just over two years, the court convicted the resort owner and his two employees. The verdict covered murder, causing disappearance of evidence, criminal conspiracy and sexual harassment under the Indian Penal Code, with provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. Ankita’s mother said she was not satisfied and wanted the death penalty; her father said the family would challenge the verdict in the High Court. Reports differ on the fines.
High Court refuses bail to Pulkit Arya during trial Court
While the trial was still running, the Uttarakhand High Court rejected the bail plea of the main accused. The prosecution had listed 97 witnesses, and the Kotdwar court had begun hearing evidence after its first hearing on 30 January 2023.
2022
High Court dismisses plea for a CBI probe; chargesheet already filed Court
The Uttarakhand High Court dismissed a petition seeking a CBI investigation, saying it was satisfied with the SIT’s inquiry. The petition had alleged that the resort was demolished to destroy evidence. The SIT had filed a chargesheet of about 500 pages three days earlier, naming the three accused, citing 97 witnesses and charging murder, evidence destruction, conspiracy, sexual harassment and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act offences.

Body recovered from the Chilla canal; angry crowd attacks MLA’s vehicle 2022 events
On the accused’s pointing, police recovered Ankita’s body from the Chilla canal, turning a missing-person case into a murder case. Residents’ anger boiled over: the vehicle of the local BJP MLA, Renu Bisht, was damaged at AIIMS Rishikesh, and a crowd set part of the resort on fire the next morning. The family refused to perform last rites for a time after a draft post-mortem report said she had died by drowning, demanding answers.

Overnight demolition at the resort; the owner’s father and brother expelled by BJP 2022 events

Why the Ankita Bhandari Case Still Matters
1. Women’s safety at work. The case showed how young women in remote jobs can depend on an employer for housing and safety, and why complaints must reach the police quickly.
2. Trust in investigations. A conviction is a major milestone, but trust depends on whether doubts, such as the overnight demolition, are answered clearly.
3. Responsible reporting. Viral recordings can raise real questions, but they can also spread unverified claims. The line between a court finding and an allegation has to stay visible.
4. Justice beyond one verdict. Families can keep seeking answers after a trial ends. Any further investigation must be impartial and respect both the victim’s family and people not found guilty.
