In short

UP Election 2027: who said what, and when. A sourced timeline of statements by Yogi Adityanath, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati, from 2022 to today.

UP Election 2027 is still without a date, but the campaign has been running since the results of 2022. This page tracks who said what, when they said it, who they were answering, and what happened next — from the 2022 Assembly campaign, through the 2024 Lok Sabha result that reshaped the state, to the exchanges of August 2026. Every direct quotation carries a date and a source. Alliance lines, seat-sharing numbers and poll dates are all still moving; where something is unconfirmed, it says so.

How to read this page. This is a record of statements and verified events, not a forecast. It does not predict a winner, treat alliance talks as done deals, or convert a Lok Sabha result into an Assembly projection. Quotations are reproduced from established news agencies and outlets; where the original wording could not be confirmed, the statement is described rather than quoted. Party claims are attributed to the party, not presented as fact.

🧠 In 60 seconds

After winning 255 of 403 seats in 2022, the BJP under Yogi Adityanath governs Uttar Pradesh; the Samajwadi Party under Akhilesh Yadav leads the opposition. The 2024 Lok Sabha result — SP 37, BJP 33, Congress 6 — changed the mood and hardened both camps. As of August 2026 the Election Commission has not announced a 2027 schedule, the SP–Congress alliance says it will continue but has not settled seats, and the BSP says it will contest alone.

UP Election 2027: Key Questions

When is the next UP Assembly election?
It is due in 2027, when the current Assembly’s five-year term ends (it was constituted in 2022). The Election Commission of India had not announced a schedule as of August 2026. Past UP elections were held in multiple phases in February–March of the election year. Last verified: August 2026.
Are SP and Congress together for 2027?
Akhilesh Yadav has said the SP–Congress alliance, part of the INDIA bloc, will continue into 2027, with seats decided by “winnability” rather than a fixed ratio. No seat-sharing deal has been announced, and Congress has publicly sought a larger share than in 2024. Last verified: August 2026.
Will the BSP contest 2027 alone?
Yes, on its stated position. On 15 January 2026 Mayawati said the BSP would fight all elections, including the 2027 UP polls, on its own and aim for a full-majority government. She left open a future alliance only if a partner could reliably transfer votes. Last verified: August 2026.
Who won the 2022 UP election?
The BJP won 255 of 403 seats with a 41.29% vote share and, with allies, formed the government; Yogi Adityanath took office for a second term in March 2022. The Samajwadi Party won 111 seats (32.06%) to lead the opposition; the BSP won one seat and the Congress two.
📚 Key Takeaways

What the record shows so far

  • 2022 set the frame. The BJP’s return with a majority — the first time a UP government had been re-elected since 1985 — made “law and order” and welfare delivery the government’s central pitch, and unemployment and inflation the opposition’s.
  • 2024 changed the mood. In the Lok Sabha election the SP won 37 of UP’s 80 seats and the BJP 33; the SP–Congress bloc took 43. Both sides redrew their 2027 plans around that result.
  • The 2022 opposition bloc has already broken up. The SBSP left for the NDA in 2023 and the RLD in early 2024 — so the 2022 alliance map does not carry forward.
  • SP–Congress: alliance yes, seats no. Akhilesh Yadav says the partnership continues; the number of seats each contests is unsettled and publicly contested.
  • BSP is going it alone on its stated position, with Mayawati rebuilding through candidate selection and a renewed Dalit–Brahmin outreach.
  • The exchanges have sharpened. In August 2026 Yogi Adityanath said voters would “wipe out” the SP “permanently”; Akhilesh Yadav has repeatedly predicted a BJP “rout”.
  • Caste census and reservation moved to the centre of the opposition’s messaging after Bihar’s 2023 survey and the 2024 “Constitution” campaign.
  • No schedule, no polls. As of August 2026 there is no ECI date and no credible, methodologically disclosed opinion poll for 2027.
  • Everything here is dated. Alliance and “what next” lines change; each carries a “last verified” note for that reason.

Yogi Adityanath: voters will “wipe out” the SP “permanently” Verified quote

Yogi Adityanath · BJPLucknowTopic: Alliance / attack

What was said: At a felicitation event for mid-day-meal cooks and a cashless-health-card distribution in Lucknow, the Chief Minister responded to Akhilesh Yadav’s remark of the previous day.

“Babua said all the members of our family are MPs, and that is why the SP remains consolidated. Notwithstanding, people will wipe it out in the next (assembly) election, permanently.”

Responding to: Akhilesh Yadav’s 22 August statement on SP unity. Why it matters: it frames 2027 as a straight BJP–SP fight and revives the “parivarvad” (dynasty) line the BJP used in 2022 and 2024.

22 AUG 2026

Akhilesh Yadav on SP cohesion Verified quote

Akhilesh Yadav · SPUttar PradeshTopic: Party organisation

What was said: Explaining why no SP parliamentarian had crossed over to the BJP, the SP chief said:

“All the members of our family are MPs, and that is why the SP remains consolidated.”

Why it matters: it drew an immediate response from Yogi Adityanath (above) and kept the family-versus-organisation argument in play a year out from the election.

Akhilesh Yadav: SP–Congress alliance to continue; “victory, not seats” Verified quote

Akhilesh Yadav · SPTopic: Alliance / seat-sharing

What was said: Through 2025 and 2026 the SP chief has repeatedly said the alliance with the Congress, as part of the INDIA bloc, will run into 2027, and that seat allocation should follow winnability.

“Even during the Lok Sabha elections, I had said the issue was not seats but victory.”

Context: reporting also indicates the SP intends a harder bargain than in 2024, while the Congress has publicly pushed for a substantially larger share of the 403 seats. Status: alliance affirmed; seat numbers not announced. Last verified: August 2026.

Sources: Business Standard, 17 June 2025 (“SP to contest 2027 as part of INDIA bloc”); Deccan Herald, 2026 (“focus on victory, not seats”).
15 JAN 2026

Mayawati: BSP will contest 2027 alone, aim for a majority Verified statement

Mayawati · BSPLucknow · press conferenceTopic: Alliance / strategy

What was said: On her 70th birthday, the BSP chief said the party would fight all elections — small and large, including the 2027 UP Assembly polls — on its own, and would form a full-majority government in the state. She said an alliance would be considered only if a future partner could be trusted to transfer its votes, particularly of upper castes, and that such a situation was “years” away.

Why it matters: it rules the BSP out of INDIA-bloc arithmetic for now and shapes how the SP–Congress side plans its Dalit outreach. Last verified: August 2026.

2025–26

BSP “Mission 2027”: candidate selection and a rebuilt Brahmin outreach

Mayawati · BSPTopic: Organisation

What happened: Mayawati said the BSP’s candidate-selection process for 2027 was under way and gave senior leader Satish Chandra Mishra a central role, revisiting the Dalit–Brahmin–Thakur combination that delivered the party a majority in 2007. Nephew Akash Anand has been positioned as her political heir and campaign face.

Why it matters: the BSP’s vote share fell to 12.88% in 2022 and it holds one Assembly seat; whether it can rebuild a transferable Dalit bloc affects every other party’s maths.

Maha Kumbh, Prayagraj: governance showcase and a stampede

Government of UP / oppositionPrayagrajTopic: Governance / law & order

What happened: The state ran the Maha Kumbh (13 January–26 February 2025) as a flagship of administrative capacity and cultural outreach, and reported a very large cumulative footfall. On 29 January 2025, during the Mauni Amavasya bathing day, a crowd crush near the Sangam killed at least 30 people (UP police figure) and injured about 60; some estimates were higher.

The exchange: opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, demanded accountability for crowd management and questioned the official toll; the government defended the arrangements and the scale of the event. Both sides have carried the Kumbh into their 2027 messaging — as proof of delivery, or of mismanagement.

The toll remains disputed between the state’s figure and higher counts cited by some families and outlets.

UP by-elections: NDA 7, SP 2

Election result9 constituenciesTopic: Electoral test

What happened: In the first UP contest after the Lok Sabha result, the BJP won six seats (Kundarki, Khair, Ghaziabad, Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan) and its ally the RLD won Meerapur; the Samajwadi Party held Karhal — where Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin Tej Pratap Yadav won — and Sisamau.

The exchange: the BJP read the 7–2 result as a recovery from June 2024 and vindication of Yogi Adityanath’s “batenge toh katenge” (“divided we fall”) framing; the SP alleged administrative interference and pointed to the two seats it retained. Both claimed momentum for 2027.

4 JUN 2024

2024 Lok Sabha result in UP: SP 37, BJP 33, Congress 6

Election resultUttar Pradesh · 80 seatsTopic: The turning point

What happened: The Samajwadi Party won 37 seats, the BJP 33, the Congress 6, the RLD 2, Apna Dal (S) 1, and the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) 1 (Nagina, won by Chandra Shekhar Azad). The SP–Congress bloc took 43 of 80; the NDA took 36. The SP became the third-largest party in the Lok Sabha.

The exchange: the BJP had campaigned on “Abki Baar, 400 Paar” and a sweep of UP; the opposition ran hard on the Constitution and reservation (“samvidhan khatre mein”) and on Akhilesh Yadav’s “PDA” — Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (backward classes, Dalits, minorities). After the result, Akhilesh Yadav credited PDA; the BJP acknowledged the setback and began recalibrating its OBC and welfare outreach.

This was the first general election since 2009 in which the BJP did not win a majority of UP’s Lok Sabha seats.

2023–24

Allies switch sides: SBSP and RLD move to the NDA

O. P. Rajbhar (SBSP); Jayant Chaudhary (RLD)Topic: Alliances

What happened: The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), which had contested 2022 with the SP and won six seats, left for the NDA in 2023, with O. P. Rajbhar joining the UP cabinet. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), an SP partner in 2022 with eight seats, moved to the NDA before the 2024 Lok Sabha election, and Jayant Chaudhary joined the Union government.

Why it matters: the 2022 “SP+” bloc that totalled roughly 125 seats no longer exists in that form — a caution against reading the 2022 alliance map into 2027.

Caste census moves to the centre of the opposition’s pitch

Akhilesh Yadav · SP / INDIA blocTopic: Caste census / reservation

What happened: After Bihar carried out a caste survey, Akhilesh Yadav and other INDIA-bloc leaders intensified demands for a caste census in Uttar Pradesh and nationally, arguing that quotas and welfare should follow enumerated population shares. The BJP resisted a state census while stepping up outreach to non-Yadav OBC and non-Jatav Dalit groups.

Why it matters: it reframed the state’s social-justice debate around numbers, and it is one of the few issues on which the opposition set the agenda between 2022 and 2024.

UP Global Investors Summit: the “trillion-dollar economy” pitch

Yogi Adityanath · Government of UPLucknowTopic: Development / economy

What was said: The government reported investment intentions of about ₹33.5 lakh crore through roughly 18,600 memoranda of understanding, projecting some 93 lakh jobs, and set a goal of making UP a one-trillion-dollar economy.

Why it matters: the summit figure became the government’s headline development claim for 2027. How much of the intended investment is actually on the ground is disputed and is tracked below in Promise vs Performance.

25 MAR 2022

Yogi Adityanath sworn in for a second term

Yogi Adityanath · BJPLucknowTopic: Government formation

What happened: Yogi Adityanath took the oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term — the first time a UP government had been re-elected since 1985. The government foregrounded its “law and order” record, including demolition action against people accused of crimes (widely termed “bulldozer” action), and continued free-foodgrain distribution.

Why it matters: the second-term governance model — security, welfare delivery, expressways, religious-tourism infrastructure — is what the BJP is asking voters to renew in 2027, and what the opposition is trying to reframe.

10 MAR 2022

2022 result declared: BJP 255, SP 111

Election resultUttar Pradesh · 403 seatsTopic: The baseline

What happened: The BJP won 255 seats (41.29% vote share); the Samajwadi Party 111 (32.06%); Apna Dal (S) 12; RLD 8; Nishad Party 6; SBSP 6; the Congress 2 (2.33%); and the BSP 1 (12.88%). With allies, the BJP’s side totalled about 273 and the SP-led bloc about 125.

The exchange: Yogi Adityanath credited security and welfare delivery; Akhilesh Yadav, whose party more than doubled its 2017 seat count, said the SP had built a base to fight from. Mayawati’s low-key, largely solo campaign left the BSP with its worst-ever Assembly tally.

The 2022 campaign: what the parties promised

All partiesTopic: Campaign / manifestos

BJP: ran on its security record and welfare delivery, with the lines “Soch Imaandaar, Kaam Damdaar, Ek Baar Fir Bhajapa Sarkar” and “Farq Saaf Hai” (contrasting its rule with earlier SP/BSP governments), and promised continued free ration.

Samajwadi Party: Akhilesh Yadav campaigned on jobs and inflation and promised 300 units of free electricity and restoration of the old pension scheme, under a “Naya UP” theme.

Congress: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led with “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” (“I am a girl, I can fight”), reserved 40% of tickets for women, and issued a set of promises (“Pratigya”) including support for women and youth.

BSP: Mayawati ran a restrained campaign around “sarvajan” (all-communities) outreach and largely without allies.

The slogans that defined UP 2022

Official campaign lines, kept separate from policy promises.

BJP

“Soch Imaandaar, Kaam Damdaar…”

“…Ek Baar Fir Bhajapa Sarkar” — an honesty-and-delivery pitch for a second term. Paired with “Farq Saaf Hai” (the difference is clear), contrasting BJP rule with earlier governments.

Congress

“Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon”

“I am a girl, I can fight” — Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s women-centred campaign, tied to a pledge of 40% of tickets for women candidates and a promises document (“Pratigya”).

Samajwadi Party

“Naya UP” and the counter to “Farq Saaf Hai”

Built around jobs, inflation and a “new UP”, with a widely-shared retort that “the difference is clear — in 2022, the BJP is swept away”.

BSP

“Sarvajan” and “bhaichara”

Mayawati’s all-communities framing, emphasising social harmony committees; a lower-decibel campaign than in 2007 or 2012.

Supporter slogans circulated online are not included here; only lines used by the parties themselves.

How the argument moved: 2022 to 2027

The stages the record shows, in order.

2022 — What they promised. BJP on security and delivery; SP on jobs and inflation; Congress on women; BSP on “sarvajan”.
March 2022 — What voters decided. BJP 255/403; SP 111; a re-elected government for the first time since 1985.
2022–23 — Government vs opposition. Investors’ summit and expressways on one side; unemployment, inflation and (from mid-2023) caste census on the other. SBSP leaves the SP bloc.
2024 — The Lok Sabha changes the equation. SP 37, BJP 33, Congress 6; RLD has already moved to the NDA. The opposition’s Constitution-and-reservation campaign lands.
Late 2024–2025 — Both sides regroup. BJP wins 7 of 9 by-elections; Maha Kumbh becomes a governance argument; the BSP declares it will go alone.
2026 — Battle lines form. SP–Congress affirm the alliance but not the seats; the personal exchanges between Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav sharpen.
2027 — The battle for 403. Schedule not yet announced. 202 needed for a majority.

The 2027 outcome is deliberately left blank.

Promise vs performance: the 2022 pledges

Status judged from official data and reporting, not from opposition claims. “Disputed” means credible sources disagree.

2022 areaWhat was promised / claimedStatus by 2026
ExpresswaysBJP: expand the expressway network🟢 Largely delivered on the trunk network — Purvanchal (2021) and Bundelkhand (2022) Expressways are operational; the Ganga Expressway is under construction with sections targeted for opening.
Free foodgrainBJP: continue free ration🟢 Continued, under the centrally-run PMGKAY, which has been extended nationally.
Investment (GIS 2023)Government: ~₹33.5 lakh crore in MoUs; ~93 lakh jobs; trillion-dollar economy🟡 Disputed — the government reports large “groundbreaking” tranches of implemented projects; independent assessments say the share of MoUs that has translated into operating investment and jobs is much smaller and hard to verify.
Government jobsBoth BJP and SP: fill vacancies / recruitment drives🟡 Disputed — the government cites lakhs of appointments made since 2017; the opposition cites pending vacancies, exam-paper leaks and delays. No agreed figure.
Old pension schemeSP and Congress: restore OPS🔴 Not implemented — UP did not revert to the old pension scheme; a central “Unified Pension Scheme” was introduced separately.
300 units free powerSP and Congress: free household electricity⚫ Not applicable — proposed by opposition parties that did not form the government; not adopted as state policy.

Yogi vs Akhilesh: the running argument

A sample of the back-and-forth, in date order.

2024 (campaign) — Akhilesh Yadav: the BJP will be routed in UP; PDA (backward classes, Dalits, minorities) will decide the state.
Oct–Nov 2024 — Yogi Adityanath: “batenge toh katenge” — a call for Hindu consolidation, used through the by-election campaign.
2025–26 — Akhilesh Yadav: repeated predictions of a BJP “rout” in 2027; the SP and the public are “ready”.
22 Aug 2026 — Akhilesh Yadav: the SP stays “consolidated” because its senior family members are all MPs.
23 Aug 2026 — Yogi Adityanath: voters will “wipe out” the SP “permanently” in the next Assembly election; renews the dynasty charge.

Mayawati has attacked the BJP’s employment record and the SP’s social record in parallel; the Congress has both allied with the SP and pressed it publicly on seats.

Who said what, by leader

Yogi Adityanath (BJP)

2022: campaigned on law and order, “bulldozer” action, welfare delivery and a contrast with earlier SP/BSP governments. After 2022: anchored the second term in the investors’ summit, expressways and religious-tourism infrastructure. After 2024: stayed the CM face; his “batenge toh katenge” line became a national talking point. On 2027: frames it as a BJP–SP fight and predicts the SP’s elimination; ties new welfare announcements (mid-day-meal honoraria, cashless health cards) to the record he is defending.

Akhilesh Yadav (SP)

2022: jobs, inflation, 300 units free power, the old pension scheme, “Naya UP”. After 2022: raised unemployment early and adopted the caste-census demand from mid-2023. After 2024: credited “PDA” for the SP’s 37 seats and made it the organising idea for 2027. On 2027: says the SP–Congress alliance continues, with seats set by winnability; predicts a BJP defeat; defends the SP as an organisation, not just a family.

Mayawati (BSP)

2022: “sarvajan” outreach, a restrained solo campaign; the BSP fell to one seat and 12.88%. After 2022: kept the party out of alliances. On 2027 (15 January 2026): the BSP contests alone and aims for a majority; an alliance only if a partner can transfer votes. Candidate selection is under way, with Satish Chandra Mishra given a lead role and Akash Anand as the campaign face.

Narendra Modi (BJP)

2022: headlined the BJP campaign on “double-engine” government, welfare and security. 2024: the “Abki Baar, 400 Paar” pitch and an intensive UP campaign; the party’s UP tally fell to 33. On 2027: expected to lead the national end of the BJP campaign; specific 2027 UP statements will be added here as they are made.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (Congress)

2022: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led with “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” and 40% women’s tickets; the Congress won two seats. 2024: the SP–Congress alliance won 43 of 80; Rahul Gandhi’s Raebareli win and the Constitution campaign were central. On 2027: the Congress says it wants a substantially larger seat share than in 2024 and has pushed the point publicly while staying in the alliance.

What UP 2027 is being fought over

Road to voting

Neutral election-administration milestones. No dates are assumed before the ECI announces them.

Where the process stands (August 2026)

  • The 18th UP Assembly was constituted in 2022; its five-year term runs to 2027, which is when the election is due.
  • The Election Commission of India has not announced a 2027 schedule — no phases, poll dates or counting date.
  • A revision of the state’s electoral rolls has been carried out ahead of the cycle; the Chief Electoral Officer, Uttar Pradesh publishes the final electorate figure and roll.
  • Senior ECI officials have reviewed 2027 preparations on visits to Lucknow; these are administrative reviews, not schedule announcements.
  • Historically, UP has voted in multiple phases in February–March of the election year, but the 2027 pattern is for the ECI to decide.

🗳️ Prediction game

AiTimeline runs a reader prediction game on the UP Election 2027 hub. Reader predictions are opinions for engagement, not scientific opinion polling, and are not published as an election forecast.

What to watch next

  • SP–Congress seat-sharing: a number, or a public break.
  • BJP/NDA seat distribution among allies and the formal CM announcement.
  • Whether the BSP’s “solo” line holds once campaigning starts.
  • Candidate lists, then manifestos.
  • The ECI schedule — the point at which “due in 2027” becomes real dates.
  • The first methodologically disclosed opinion polls.
  • Voting, counting and government formation.
Has the Election Commission announced the UP 2027 election date?
No. As of August 2026 there is no ECI schedule for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. The election is due in 2027 because the current Assembly’s term ends that year. ECI officials have reviewed preparations, which is routine and not a schedule announcement.
Is the SP-Congress alliance confirmed for 2027?
The alliance itself is affirmed — Akhilesh Yadav has said it will continue as part of the INDIA bloc. What is not settled is how many of the 403 seats each party contests. The SP has signalled a hard bargain; the Congress has publicly sought a larger share than in 2024. Last verified: August 2026.
What did Yogi Adityanath say about the SP in August 2026?
On 23 August 2026 in Lucknow he said that voters would “wipe out” the Samajwadi Party “permanently” in the next Assembly election, responding to Akhilesh Yadav’s remark that the SP stays consolidated because its senior family members are MPs.
Why did the 2024 Lok Sabha result matter for UP 2027?
Because the Samajwadi Party won 37 of UP’s 80 seats and the BJP 33, reversing the expectation of a BJP sweep. It validated the opposition’s caste and Constitution messaging and forced the BJP to recalibrate. It does not, on its own, predict the Assembly result.
Is the BSP part of any alliance for 2027?
No, on its stated position. Mayawati said on 15 January 2026 that the BSP would contest the 2027 UP election alone and aim for a majority, leaving an alliance open only if a future partner could reliably transfer votes.

UP Election 2027 FAQ

When is the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly election?
It is due in 2027. The 18th UP Assembly was constituted in 2022 and its five-year term ends in 2027, so the election must be held by then. The Election Commission of India will announce the exact phases and dates; as of August 2026 it had not done so.

Who won the 2022 UP election and by how much?

How did the Samajwadi Party do in 2022?
The SP won 111 seats with 32.06% of the vote, more than doubling its 2017 seat count and consolidating its position as the main opposition. Its 2022 partners included the RLD and SBSP, both of which later moved to the NDA.
What happened to the BSP in 2022?
The BSP won a single seat with a 12.88% vote share, its weakest Assembly performance. It ran a low-key, largely solo campaign around “sarvajan” outreach.

What is “PDA”?
It is Akhilesh Yadav’s shorthand for Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak — backward classes, Dalits and minorities — the coalition the SP credits for its 2024 performance and is building its 2027 campaign around. Yadav has also glossed it as “Prem, Daya, Apnapan” (love, compassion, belonging).
What is the “batenge toh katenge” slogan?
It translates as “divided we fall”. Yogi Adityanath used it during the late-2024 campaign as a call for Hindu-voter consolidation. It was debated within the NDA and became a recurring reference point in the UP argument.
Did the RLD and SBSP switch sides?
Yes. The SBSP (O. P. Rajbhar) left the SP-led bloc for the NDA in 2023; the RLD (Jayant Chaudhary) moved to the NDA before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Both are currently NDA partners.
Is Yogi Adityanath the BJP’s CM face for 2027?
He is the incumbent and has led the BJP’s UP messaging continuously since 2017. The party has not issued a separate formal announcement for 2027; that is one of the items in the “what to watch” list.
What is the Congress asking for in the alliance?
Reporting indicates the Congress wants a considerably larger share of seats than the roughly 17 it contested in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in UP. No figure has been agreed, and the SP has signalled it will bargain harder than in 2024.
Will the BSP really contest alone?

Did any party form government re-elected in UP before 2022?
The 2022 result was the first time since 1985 that a sitting UP government was returned to power. That is why the BJP treats “continuity” as a core argument.
