When the United States entered World War II, Harley-Davidson converted a large share of its manufacturing capacity to military production, most prominently the WLA — a militarized version of the 45 cu in Flathead-powered WL model, adapted with blackout lighting, ammunition-box mounts, a heavy-duty luggage rack and other field modifications specified by the Army. Documented figures put total wartime military motorcycle production at roughly 90,000 units, the large majority WLA and the closely related WLC variant built for Canadian forces.
